Arizona Cyclists Fatally Struck by Semi

34-year-old cyclist Miguel Angel Quintero died Friday afternoon after being struck by a semi-truck.

Details of the Fatal Trucking Accident

According to KVOA, the incident occurred a little before 2 p.m. at Prince Road and First Avenue.

Quintero and the semi-truck driver were both travelling eastbound on Prince Road when the truck made a right turn onto First Avenue and struck the bicyclist, according to Tucson Police. Quintero was in the bicycle lane at the time of the incident.

Officials said the driver of the truck remained on the scene, and that speed and impairment did not seem to be factors in the accident. No citations have been made so far.

The accident is still being investigated.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT),:

  • Approximately 2.45 persons were killed each day in a crash in Arizona in 2015.
  • An average of one person was killed every 9.79 hours.
  • Of all pedestrian crashes,11.44% were fatal.
  • 1.95% of Pedalcycle crashes were fatal.
  • Crashes which occurred during daylight hours (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) accounted for 72.5% of all crashes.
