An Arizona high school student has died from injuries he sustained during a high school football game.

About the Fatal Football Injury

  • Charles Youvella, a senior at Hopi High School in north-eastern Arizona, died Monday after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a high school football game.
  • According to CBS News, Youvella’s fell on his head after being tackled during the fourth quarter of a Saturday night playoff game – he collapsed a couple of plays later.
  • Youvella regained consciousness and was talking as he was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, but his condition began to worsen shortly after. He died two days later.

Football Injuries Facing National Scrutiny

  • Youvella’s death comes amid national attention into football injuries with NFL has recently proposing a $165 million settlement to end a class action lawsuit made by 4,500 former players.
  • Further, just two weeks before the tragic accident, the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council released data showing that 250,000 people under the age of 19 visited the emergency room in connection to sports related injuries and concussions – up from 150,000 recorded in 2001.
  • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between 1.6 million and 3.8 million sports related concussions occur every year.
