A family in Emerald Isle, North Carolina was forced to cut the Fourth-of-July festivities short when the deck of their beach house collapsed, injuring several individuals in the process.

Details of the Incident

According to ABC News Online, a family vacationing in the beach town of Emerald Isle, North Carolina was in the midst of taking a family photo when the deck of their beach house collapsed, injuring several of the family members in the process.

An early report of the incident listed the number of people injured as at least 14, but a spokeswoman at a hospital nearby the incident later listed the number of injured individuals at as many as 20.

Officials reported that they responded to an emergency call around 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 4th. Responders reported that the family had been gathering on the deck of their beachfront home to take a group picture when the incident occurred.

At Least Two Critically Injured

Two individuals were reported as being in critical condition out of the initial 14 injured individuals.  Reported injuries of the individuals involved ranged from minor cuts and bruises to more severe, serious injuries such as abrasions and broken bones.

Officials are baffled as to why the incident occurred, many of them stating that a deck collapse of that magnitude was uncommon.  That said, the cause of the collapse is still unknown.
