Melvin Thathiah

Attorney at Thomas J. Henry Law's Dallas Office

Mr. Melvin Thathiah graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. There, he participated in many student orientation organizations and his fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha. He attended Florida Coastal School of Law and graduated with his Juris Doctorate. He has been licensed to practice in Texas since May 2005.

When Mr. Thathiah was a child, age 2, his parents immigrated to the United States from South Africa to allow him the opportunity to grow up in a free country and be whatever he dreamed of becoming. That goal would become apparent to him around his senior year of high school in a mentorship class that paired him with a practicing attorney. Mr. Thathiah shadowed the attorney each week and learned some valuable lessons that would then shape what he wanted to do with his life. He was committed to earning a living helping people through the practice of law.

Mr. Thathiah’s career took him to downtown Dallas for two years, learning from an experienced attorney who had been practicing for over 30 years when he was hired to be a law clerk. He passed the Bar in 2005 to become an attorney with the same office. Mr. Thathiah learned how to handle cases from divorces and business contract disputes to juvenile criminal matters. His career then took him to Little Rock, Arkansas to have a lead role in Texas litigation at the age of 28. It was an opportunity he could not pass up, even though it would mean moving his longtime girlfriend, who had recently become his fiancé, away from Texas – an idea she was not fond of.

After marrying the following August, Mr. Thathiah’s wife, Alyson, moved to Little Rock to join him for two years; however, as they were expecting their first child, Mr. Thathiah and his wife knew they wanted to get back to Texas to be close to family and friends while raising children. The firm opened a Texas office managed by Mr. Thathiah, so Alyson and he began their life with a daughter soon to join them.

Over the next eight years, Mr. Thathiah practiced civil litigation all over the great State of Texas and learned how each major – and minor – county-operated in the court system. He has been in courts at all levels, arguing before judges and juries. Mr. Thathiah was also able to make it home for dinner most nights to his loving family, which had been added to again in 2012 with his son, as well as make it to church on Sunday.

In 2015, Mr. Thathiah opened his own multi-faceted practice. As an attorney practicing for several years, with friends from all walks of life, he was approached about handling matters all over the legal field. He has gathered years of civil and criminal trial experience since that time.

Mr. Thathiah was appointed and sworn into the bench in 2015 to be an Associate Judge for the Justice of the Peace Courts in Collin County. Since then, he has heard many cases from the bench and acted to serve the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Texas. As an Associate Judge, one of only three in the county for the Justice Courts, he was chosen by the commissioner’s court to preside in the absence of the sitting judges. He sat in Plano and McKinney and had the opportunity to serve the members of those communities in the way he believed they should be treated. He heard examining trials, truancy matters, small claims, debt claims, and evictions. Mr. Thathiah issued decisions that are fair, honest, and loyal to the judicial canons of ethics and both the Federal and State Constitutions. Those are three characteristics he feels drive who he is personally and professionally.

Mr. Thathiah strives to be an attorney guided by providing the best service he can to his clients, especially when they may be going through some of their worst times. He is excited to be an attorney at Thomas J. Henry Law and to serve the community at a firm that is focused on truly helping people.

Mr. Thathiah is married to Alyson and is a dedicated father to Taryn and Caleb. They are members of The Heights Baptist Church. He is also a regular volunteer in Plano Independent School District and loves to spend time watching his kids play the sports they love or doing outdoor activities like hunting and fishing.
