Authorities Investigate Fatal Accident Involving Unattended Bus

An elementary school principal was killed Monday when she was struck by an unattended school bus.

Details of the Bus Accident

Two days ago, Susan Jordan of Amy Beverland Elementary School was killed when a school bus driver left the bus unattended and did not place the vehicle in park.

Before her death, Jordan was able to save several students and pushing them away from the bus. Two 10-year-olds were injured.

The bus driver is not being prosecuted for any crime yet, so her name will not be released until further notice.

Bus Accident Statistics

Many rely on public transportation to get where they need to be. This can easily cause a strain on the transportation system and lead to accidents. In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that 54,000 bus accidents resulted in 278 deaths and 27,000 injuries. Then in 2011, the number of bus accidents rose to 56,000 leading to 283 deaths and 24,000 injuries.

Overall, there have 1,236 school bus related fatal accidents between 2001 and 2010, resulting in 1,368 deaths – about 137 deaths every year.
