Authorities Investigate Renton Bus Crash

Jennifer Jussell4 months ago

21 elementary school students and one bus driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries after two school buses crashed in Renton, Washington.

Details of the School Bus Accident

According to KIRO, 17 of the Lakeridge Elementary School students had to be transported to hospitals, while four other students did not require hospitalization.

Around 9:30 A.M. on Friday, one bus was filmed rear-ending another in the 2100 block of Southwest Sunset Boulevard. The wind shield of the at-fault bus was shattered, while the other bus' rear was smashed-in. The students had just been picked up to go to school from two nearby apartment complexes.

Multiple police and firefighters responded to the scene, while emergency personnel used a nearby apartment complex as a medical triage area for the students. Parents also arrived quickly on scene to find their children. Twelve of the more seriously injured children were transported by ambulance to area hospitals, while five others were driven by parents.

RentonPD tweeted that all injuries sustained were minor.

The elementary schoolers are shaken by the accident, but doing fine.

“I was sitting down in the seats and then bus 13 hit our bus and I flew over like two of the seats,” said student Teashawn Richmond, 11.

“I'm thinking about how I never want to go on the bus forever again,” said Christian Allen, a 6-year-old who hit his head on the seat in front of him during the collision. Him and his brother went to the doctor to be checked out.

Authorities Investigate Buses and Accidents

Whilst the Washington State Patrol is examining the buses, both the Renton Police and the Renton School district are investigating the crash. Both drivers will be meeting with the district on Monday, but the district is waiting for the outcome of the police investigation before deciding when the the drivers will be clear to transport students again.

Both buses, with a capacity for 75 children each, were said to be full at the time of the collision.

Renton School District officials say that all drivers must pass training before they are approved as safe to drive. The district called the crash “an anomaly,” reminding parents that riding the bus is still the safest means of transporting kids to and from school.
