Auto-Pedestrian Crash Kills Shelbyville Man

A 23-year-old man was killed in an auto-pedestrian crash on US 96, about two miles south of Jasper around 6:50 a.m. Thursday morning. 

Description of Auto-Pedestrian Crash 

According to FOX News (KBTV), the man killed in an auto-pedestrian crash near Jasper was Jody Michael Vaughn of Shelbyville, TX.

A 2013 tractor-tractor towing a pole trailer was driving southbound on US 96 in the inside lane. For reasons unknown, Vaughn ran out in front of the truck and was killed instantly. The driver was not injured, but visibly shaken after the incident. 

This will be an ongoing investigation. Troopers are still trying to figure out why Vaughn ran out into the roadway. No further details have been released at this time.

The following data was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • Pedestrian fatalities tallied up to 485 in 2013. This is a 0.4% decrease from 2012.
  • Of all persons killed in vehicles where restraint usage was pertinent and usage was known in 2013, 44.7% were reported with no seat belt when the fatal crash occurred.
  • In 2013, there were 1,089 people killed in motor vehicle traffic crashes where a driver was under the influence of alcohol. This is 32.2% of the total number of people killed in traffic crashes.
  • Traffic crash fatalities in rural areas of Texas accounted for 55.76% of the state’s traffic fatalities. There were 1,883 deaths in rural traffic crashes.
