An alleged drunk driver has had his bail set at $1 million as he awaits trial for a fatal drunk accident that killed two children.

About the Suspected Drunk Driving Accident

According to the Courant, parents Gina Schroder and Michael Cruz and their children were on their way back from Wal-Mart in the early morning hours when they were rear-ended by a black GMC Denali.

The driver, Israel Gonzalez, 28, was borrowing a friend’s Denali and was presumed to be intoxicated as he fled the scene on foot after the crash.

Two of the children, Lorenzo, 8, and Tatiana, 5, were killed in the accident, while the parents and their third child, Alejandro, 12, were hospitalized with critical injuries.

Police were able to find Gonzalez shortly after speaking to the owner of the Denali who told police that Gonzalez had awaken him shortly after the accident stating that he was drunk and involved in a collision.

Charges Facing the Alleged Drunk Driver

Gonzalez was arraigned Monday in Superior Court in Meriden where is bail was set at $1 million dollars after a judge determined the man a flight risk as he had fled from the accident, was in possession of multiple identification cards at the time of his arrest and was in the county illegally.

He is facing several felony counts including evading responsibility, reckless driving and driving without a license. The prosecution is likely to add charges as more evidence is gathered.
