Bicyclist Fatally Struck by School Bus

A bicyclist was killed after being struck by a school bus on the north side of Indianapolis Thursday morning.

About the Fatal Bus Accident

According to WTHR, the collision occurred just before 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Ditch Road and Westlane.

Authorities said the bicyclist was traveling westbound on Westlane in a designated bike route when he was struck by the eastbound school bus as it made a left turn onto Ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver, 72-year-old Bessie Smith, was the only person aboard the bus when the accident occurred.

The bus was contracted out of out of IPS and was in the area to transport a student from a Washington Township school to an IPS school.

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 677 pedalcyclist were killed in auto accidents in 2011. Additionally another 48,000 were injured.
  • 69 percent of fatal accident involving cyclists occurred in urban areas, and 59 percent occurred at non-intersections.
  • Cycling accidents were most common between the hours of 4 pm and 7:59 pm – the fewest occurred between the hours of midnight and 3:59 am.
Safety Tips for Cyclists
  • NHTSA recommends that all cyclists wear properly fitting helmets every time they ride.
  • Cyclist are considered vehicle operators and, as such, are required to follow the same rules as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signals, signs and lane markings.
  • Cyclists can increase there visibility by wearing florescent or brightly colored clothing. When riding at night, they should use a front light and a rear reflector or flashing rear light.
