One person is dead following a bicycle accident in Kewuanee County.

About the Fatal Bicycle Accident

According to NBC Wisconsin, 49-year-old Andrew J. Nowak was hit and killed by a vehicle early Tuesday. The collision occurred near Algoma, about 500 feet east of County Highway D along State Highway 54. Both the vehicle and bicyclist were headed eastbound.

Authorities in Kewaunee County are investigating the crash, but say it was mostly likely just a tragic occurrence and that neither the driver nor the bicyclist was at fault.

Josh Latour, who lives along highway 54, told NBC Wisconsin, “Everybody is all grouped together. Everybody likes to leap frog each other and passing each other a lot.”

The 20-year-old driver hit Nowak at about 55 miles per hour. Law enforcement say both men are believed to have been obeying traffic laws.

“The conditions couldn't be better for a morning out on a bike but unfortunately when you get a clear day like this there are other obstructions that come into play,” Sheriff Matt Joski of the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Office told NBC Wisconsin.

Driver Blames Sun for Accident

The driver of the vehicle told the Kewaunee County that he was blinded by the sun and didn’t see Nowak on his bike.

“It's a terrible tragedy but again in this case, neither of the individuals were doing anything illegal or wrong,” said Sheriff Joski.

The Wisconsin State Patrol’s Accident Reconstruction team and the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s department are currently investigating the crash.
