Big Rig Collides with Freeway Sign, Driver Killed Instantly

 A crash on the 10 Freeway in Fontana, California claimed the life of a big rig driver early Monday morning.

Description of the California Truck Crash

According to CBS News, the semi truck collided with a large freeway sign around 3:00 a.m., west of Citrus Avenue. The truck destroyed a guardrail and crashed into a Citrus Avenue exit sign. The unidentified driver was killed instantly.

The semi truck was carrying a load of frozen chickens, and was found engulfed in flames by the time the police had arrived. The fire took 20 minutes to extinguish.

The crash also caused a minor chain reaction, but no other injuries were reported. All lanes were blocked at Sierra Avenue after a SigAlert was issued.

Two lanes were finally opened at around 5:30 a.m.

  • California had more traffic fatalities than any state other than Texas. 
  • Vehicle occupants killed increased 5.1 percent from 2011. Vehicle occupants injured decreased 0.1 percent over that same year.
  • A fatal and injury traffic collision was reported every three minutes and fourteen seconds.
