1 Dead, 17 Injured in Georgia Pileup

One person is dead and at least 17 others are injured following an eight-vehicle crash in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

Police Investigate Cause of Eight-Vehicle Pileup

WCTV reports that the crash occurred along Highway 361 near Atlanta.

Upon arriving to the scene, Gwinnett County first responders found a burning car trapped beneath a tractor-trailer. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nine others were taken to nearby hospitals. Two of the injured were listed in critical condition.

Eight other people suffered minor injuries and were evaluated at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 35,092 people were killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2015. This marked a 7.2-percent increase over the 32,744 deaths recorded in 2014 – the largest percentage increase recorded since 1966.
  • Of those killed in traffic accidents in 2015:
    • 22,441 were occupants of passenger vehicles
    • 5,376 were pedestrians
    • 4,976 were motorcyclists (operators and passengers)
    • 818 were pedalcyclists
    • 667 were occupants of large trucks
    • 227 were listed as other or as unknown
  • An additional 2,443,000 people were injured in traffic accidents in 2015.
