A crane smashed into an apartment building in Dallas during a violent windstorm last week creating destruction for the residents.
The damage caused by the crane prevented over 500 residents of the complex from moving back in. At this point it is uncertain whether the owners will fix the existing building or rebuild entirely.
The crane that crashed had not been used that day and was supposed to be able to withstand up 95 mph winds. During the storm, it was said there were winds up to 71 mph. While the investigation into the crash is still underway it is believed that the crane may have not been allowed to weathervane correctly.
Typically the operator will unlock the brake so that the crane’s arm can sway in the wind. Video footage showed another crane nearby that did not crash in the wind.
While it is too soon to say what was the cause, Bigge, the crane company, is no stranger to fines and violations. In fact, the company had another fatal crash in Arkansas involving a nuclear power plant in 2013 along with 14 different violations in the past 10 years.
