3 Dead in Spicewood Charter Bus Accident

Three teenagers were killed Saturday night near the Travis and Blanco county line after their vehicle collided with a charter bus.

Details of the Fatal Bus Crash

The Austin Statesmen reports June Smith, 18, Isabella Torres, 17, and Taylor Mendez, 17, all of Round Rock, were killed just before midnight on Saturday when their vehicle crashed with into a bus on Texas 71 at Fall Creek Road.

Officials say a Chevrolet Cobalt was northbound on Fall Creek when its driver failed to yield the right of way to a charter bus that was traveling southeast on Texas 71. The car struck the bus killing all three of the car’s occupants.

The bus was chartered by Huston-Tillotson University and was returning from a baseball game in Hobbs, New Mexico. None of the players or coaching staff on the bus sustained injuries, but the driver, Adolphus Kimbro, 62, was hospitalized in stable condition.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,531 traffic-related deaths were recorded in Texas in 2015, marking little change from the 3,536 deaths reported in 2014.
  • Of the deaths recorded in 2105, 1,925 occurred in rural areas of the state and 1,255 were attributed to singe vehicle run-off-the-road accidents.
  • An additional 246,335 people were injured in auto accidents in Texas in 2015.
  • Based on reportable crash data for 2015, TxDOT estimates:
    • A person was killed in a traffic accident in Texas every 2 hours and 29 minutes.
    • A person was injured every 2 minutes and 8 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 61 seconds.
