4,000 Pounds of Soup Recalled for Fear of Botulism

Guymon Extracts has recalled roughly 4,200 pounds of pork soup after a mistake during processing left the soup vulnerable to spore-forming bacteria, including the bacteria responsible for botulism.

About the Guymon Extracts Soup Recall

According to the Miami Herald, the recall affects soup distributed to seven states, including California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Texas, and Washington.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has designated the recall as a Class 1 recall, meaning the recall involves “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

Along with the botulism bacteria, recall documents listed Clostridium perfingens among possible contaminates According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Clostridium perfingens is responsible for one million foodborne illnesses every year.

The product, “Pork Soup with Rendered Pork Fat (from bone)”, was sold in 2.2-pound bags with a best-by date of December 22, 2019. Affected product will have a product code of 61306 and the lot code 010218-1.

What Is Botulism?

Botulism is a serious and potentially fatal food poisoning often linked to improperly sterilized canned meats and other preserved foods. Upon infection, the toxin attacks the body’s nerves and can cause difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and death.

Symptoms of botulism usually start with weakness of the muscles that control the eyes, face, mouth, and throat. This weakness may spread to the neck, arms, torso, and legs. Botulism also can weaken the muscles involved in breathing, which can lead to difficulty breathing and even death.

If you display symptoms of botulism, whether you suspect you have eaten contaminated food or not, it is essential that you see your doctor or go to the emergency room immediately.
