More than 500 passengers and crew members were evacuated from a cruise ship on Wednesday after it caught on fire roughly one mile north of Puerto Rico.
According to NBC News, the Caribbean Fantasy is a combination between a cruise ship and a ferry vessel. Early Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard received a call of a fire on board the ship.
One of the mechanics in the control room said a hose carrying fuel suddenly burst open and caught fire. After nearly two hours of attempting to extinguish the blaze, the mechanics’ attempts to control the fire were abandoned.
In total, some 500 people were evacuated from the ship into San Jan harbor.
Reports indicate several dozen people were seen on stretchers. Some were treated for dehydration, blood pressure, and respiratory problems.
At least one stretcher carried an individual requiring IV. That man was also carrying a baby.
Passengers in good health were taken out of the area.
