According to KHON2, a six-month-old baby boy is dead after being hit by a truck while crossing the street with his family in Waimanalo, Hawaii, on Monday night.

Woman Faces Charges in Fatal Wreck

A man and woman were walking with their two boys, aged three and six months, on Kalanianaole Highway and Wailea Street at around 7:00 p.m. local time. As the family crossed the street at a mid-block crosswalk, a pickup truck crashed into them.

The two boys were hospitalized in critical and serious condition, reports KHON2. Both children suffered from severe head injuries. Sadly, the six-month-old boy succumbed to his injuries a day after the wreck. The three-year-old boy was transported to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children. The mother sustained a leg injury in the crash and the father was not significantly injured.

The driver of the truck, 26-year-old Annie Akau, fled the scene after the crash. Police would later find Akau and book her on a litany of charges, including negligent injury, accident involving death or substantial injury, and operating a vehicle under the influence. KHON2 reports that Akau’s husband was also arrested for hindering prosecution.

Residents say the area where the fatal pedestrian accident occurred is full of speeding drivers, making it very dangerous at the mid-block crosswalk, reports KHON2.
