According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), five of Igloo’s Elite Marine cooler models are designed with stainless-steel latches that lock automatically when the lid is fully closed. This locking feature poses an entrapment and suffocation hazard to children who can fit inside the coolers. One family reported that their child had to be freed from the container after he hid inside and became entrapped. Models equipped with this locking feature were listed in the CPSC’s report and are displayed below:
Recalled units were sold at West Marine, Sportsman’s Warehouse, and other home and recreational stores nationwide as well as online at Amazon.com and www.igloocoolers.com from January 2015 through March 2019. The coolers were sold in 54, 72, 94, 110, and 150-quart sizes for $10 to $180.
Information provided by the Consumer Product Safety Commission:
The CPSC recommends that owners of the recalled cooler immediately place it in an area where children cannot access the product. Igloo Coolers is offering a free replacement latch and instructions on how to remove and dispose of the existing stainless-steel latch when consumers call their toll-free number at 866-509-3503 or report their problem on their website at www.igloocoolers.com. Igloo Coolers is available for contact between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday.
