Austin Trooper Collides with School Bus and SUV

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was involved in a crash with a school bus carrying KIPP Austin Public Schools students and an SUV near the intersection of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Springdale Road.

About the Austin School Bus Accident

According KXAN, first responders arrived to the scene of the crash around 4:43 pm Monday. Video of the crash allegedly shows the school bus traveling in the right lane of eastbound MLK when it is struck head-on by the highway patrol vehicle.

At least one student was transported to the hospital following the crash and another was taken to an urgent care clinic. Six other children were evaluated by Austin-Travis County EMS.

The trooper was transported to Dell Seton Medical Center with serious injuries; fortunately, his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Accident reconstructionists are investigating the accident. No citations have been issued.

School Transportation Accident Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 1,344 people killed in school-transportation-related crashes recorded between 2004 and 2013. This averages to 134 fatalities per year.
  • Of the 1,344 fatalities, only 8 percent were occupants of school transportation vehicles.
  • Most (71%) of the people who lost their lives in these crashes were occupants of other vehicles involved in the crashes.
  • Nonoccupants, including pedestrians, bicyclists, etc., accounted for 21 percent of the fatalities.
  • Among the 106 occupants killed in school transportation vehicles between 2004 and 2013, 45 were drivers and 61 were passengers.
