One person is dead and three others are injured as a result of a crash in Polk County.
Details about the Fatal Accident in Polk County
According to KYTX News, one person has died and another three people were sent to the hospital after a two-vehicle accident near Livingston in Polk County.
The Texas Department of Public Safety has reported that on January 14, 2016, around 6 p.m., 30-year-old Dawn Poirier, swerved her vehicle in order to avoid hitting a truck that was backing out of a driveway. When she swerved to avoid the truck, she went into the opposite lane and hit a 2009 Toyota when she then overturned her vehicle.
After the collision, Poirier was transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital where she later died from her injuries sustained in the accident. Two other passengers in her vehicle, Maddalynne Poirier, 7, and Knighton Poirier, age unknown, were taken to Hermann Hospital for treatment.
Additionally, the driver of the Toyota, 51-year-old Tracy Nettles, was also transported to Hermann Hospital.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the truck that Poirier was attempting to avoid that was backing out of the driveway left the scene. The only description that was provided by the Department of Public Safety is that the truck is white.
Important Information about Children Involved in Car Accidents
Although the children involved in this accident are expected to be okay after their eventual release from the hospital, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that nearly 640 children ages 12 years and younger die as passengers in car accidents every year.
Another 127,250 children in the same age range were injured in car accidents in the United States in 2013. According to the CDC, 38 percent of the children who died in accidents in 2013 were not properly restrained in the vehicle.
