Avoid These Unsafe Cars in 2019

Staff Writer2 months ago

It probably won’t surprise anyone that the leading cause of accidental deaths to Americans is from motor vehicle accidents. Automobile accidents have been a major source of injuries and death to Americans for decades. Government estimates indicate that about 37,000 people die each year in vehicle crashes (the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) puts the exact figure for 2017 at 37,133.)  While general vehicle safety has improved over the years, certain makes and models present occupants with accident fatality rates much higher than the industry average for all vehicles. Let’s review some of this data so you can avoid these unsafe cars in 2019.

Unsafe Cars

As alluded to above, a vehicle makes it into the “unsafe cars” category if the vehicle has an above-average accident fatality rate. People looking to purchase a car for themselves or a loved one will have an interest in knowing which vehicles are historically involved in a greater number of fatal crashes. The list of 14 vehicles, stretching from model years 2013 to 2017, comes from statistics compiled from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System. The list includes vehicles that are at least twice as likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to the average vehicle.

Most Unsafe Cars

While many of the vehicles that can be found on the most unsafe cars list are small, the list is not composed purely of the smallest vehicles on the road today. A few of the vehicles that made it on the list could be classified as “performance cars,” including the Chevrolet Corvette, Nissan 370Z, and the Hyundai Veloster Turbo. While you might find this surprising at first, consider that persons who are attracted to these and similar vehicles may sometimes be more aggressive on the road than the average driver. Remember this study is ranking the most dangerous cars based upon the fatality rates associated with them, not suggesting that the vehicle might have a design flaw or structural weakness that contributed to a higher risk of death.

Dangerous Car

For a full list of the most dangerous cars, you should visit iSeeCars. As already noted, many of the cars on the list are compact cars; others include the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and the other performance cars noted above. Different people will choose to interpret these findings in different ways. The list simply presents the vehicles in the order in which they were involved in fatal crashes.

Finding a vehicle on the list does not indicate that it is defective or was made with a serious design flaw. Perhaps a few of the vehicles that made it to the list are attractive to those overly aggressive drivers who drive fast and are involved in more high-speed accidents, which increases the risk of serious injury, permanent disability, or death in a traffic accident. Regardless of your choice of vehicle, being a safe and courteous driver is always a good idea.
