Elderly Friendswood Couple Hit and Killed by Car

An elderly couple has died in Friendswood, Texas after they were hit by a vehicle in front of an intermediate school.

Details about the Accident Involving the Elderly Couple

KHOU News in Houston is reporting that an elderly couple was hit by a vehicle in front of Brookside Intermediate School on Wednesday evening, according to police.

The woman died at the scene of the accident, and the man was taken to the hospital with serious and life-threatening injuries. The man later died at the hospital.

The pedestrian accident happened along FM 528 near Bay Area Boulevard. The school was hosting two events on Wednesday evening, a boys’ basketball game and a concert. The couple had been crossing the street in front of the school when they were hit by an oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the couple did stay at the scene of the accident and cooperated with police. The driver also submitted to a blood test. The Friendswood Police Department is currently working to figure out exactly what happened at the scene of the accident.

The identities of the victims have not been release by the police at this time.

Traffic Fatalities and the Elderly

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

  • In 2013, 4,115 people aged 70 and older died in motor vehicle crashes – deaths of older people in motor vehicle accidents remained unchanged from the previous year.
  • In 2013, 579 of motor vehicle fatalities involving the elderly were motorcyclists, bicyclist, and pedestrians.
  • Of those 579 deaths, 500 of them were strictly pedestrian victims.
