Heroic Crossing Guard Sacrifices Life to Save Two Children
An 88-year-old crossing guard selflessly risked and lost his life saving two children from being struck by a car in Kansas City, Kansas.
About the Heroic Deed of Crossing Guard Bob Nill
According to CBS News, Bob Nill, commonly known as “Mr. Bob” by fond community members, was working a routine shift Tuesday morning (February 18) when the incident occurred. While serving as a crossing guard in front of Christ the King Catholic School, the 88-year-old was hit by a black sedan as he guided two young brothers, ages 7 and 11, out of the path of the speeding vehicle.
Preliminary reports suggest the crosswalk was marked by flashing yellow lights which were engaged at the time of the fatal accident. The driver of the sedan remained at the scene, and the incident remains under investigation.
The Kansas City Police Department made the statement that Nill was horrifically injured in the collision and could not overcome his wounds. He later passed away at a nearby hospital.
Nill began working as a crossing guard in 2015 after being retired to help children. Christ the King Catholic School publicly thanked Nill for his years of service and final sacrifice.
Statements in Remembrance of Bob Nill
Christ the King Catholic School deemed Nill a hero and woefully stated, “Our hearts are heavy as we inform you of [Nill]’s passing. Please continue to keep Mr. Nill and his family in your prayers as well as the students, parents, and teachers who witnessed today’s accident.”
The principal of the school, Cathy Fithian, revealed that many students cared for Nill and lavished him with Valentine’s Day gifts. She also laments, “He always thought about the kids more than himself.”
The mayor, David Alvey, also commented on the tragedy saying, “Mr. Nill’s act of selfless devotion to the children under his care inspires all of us. We are grateful for the goodness that he has given to our community for so many years.”
