News outlets in Denver are reporting an off-duty police officer that was injured early Friday morning after her vehicle was struck by a suspected drunk driver.
About the Denver Car Crash
According to 9News, the accident happened at 2 a.m. on the eastbound ramp of Interstate 70 onto Pena Blvd. The Denver officer was off-duty and guarding a construction site when a car crashed into the back of her vehicle. The officer’s car was in a coned-off area when the accident occurred.
The officer, the driver, and a male passenger were taken to the hospital. None are believed to have sustained serious injuries.
The driver that hit the officer’s vehicle, identified only as a female, was suspected of drunk driving.
Authorities shut down parts of Pena Blvd to investigate the crash.

According to the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), there were 133 drunk driving fatalities statewide in 2012. Those deaths represented 28% of all motor vehicle-related accidents. That same year, approximately 25,385 people were arrested for driving under the influence. MADD estimates that drunk driving cost Colorado taxpayers $704 million in 2012.
