According to a CBS DFW report, a police chase in Highland Park Tuesday morning ended in a fatal car crash. Police had suspended a chase when the suspect ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle.

Details of the Fatal Crash

Initial reports say Highland Park Police in Dallas initiated a traffic stop at approximately 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday for a vehicle that had been reported as stolen in March. The suspect fled from police, but the chase was suspended for safety concerns when the driver entered a residential area.

Police say the driver continued to flee and eventually ran a stop sign near Monticello Ave and Homer St and collided with another vehicle. The suspect fled the scene while witnesses assisted the victims.

The driver of the impacted vehicle and her teenage son were transported to Baylor Medical Center. The teen was pronounced dead upon arrival. The mother is listed in critical condition. The identities of both victims have not been released.

Police are still looking for the suspect.

Police Pursuit Statistics

According to Pursuit Safety about 35-40% of all police pursuits end in collisions. Often times, police pursuits are the result of traffic violations. Only approximately 8.6% of police pursuits are for violent felonies. Each day roughly one person is killed as the result of a police chase.

Furthermore, only about 24% of drivers are able to hear and determine which direction a police siren is coming from. In incidents where excessive speeds are involved, some drivers won’t hear sirens because they are behind the sound of the siren.
