Multiple sources are reporting that a head-on-collision on a major New Jersey roadway has left three people dead and two women seriously injured, according to authorities.
At this point in the investigation, the exact cause of the accident that happened on Route 9 in Old Bridge, near Route 516 is unclear. According to police, a sport utility vehicle and a car were involved in an accident which was originally reported at around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses at the scene of the accident say the SUV crossed over a grassy median and collided with a sedan on the opposite side of the road.
Both the drivers and a 62-year-old male passenger in the vehicle were killed. Two women – ages 32 and 86 – were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.
As a result of the accident, police were forced to close a section of the highway for a few hours, which caused major travel delays in the area. By the evening, all lanes were reopened.
A full investigation into the circumstances of the accident is pending.
