Two Dead in Austin Drunk Driving Accident

A Leander ISD teacher and her son have died following a drunk driving crash in Austin.

About the Austin Drunk Driving Collision

According to KXAN, kindergarten teacher Peggy Howard, 60, and her son Cale Howard, 18, were traveling south on FM 620 in Austin, Texas when they were rear ended by a Chevrolet Avalanche driven by 21-year-old Nicholas Michael Justin Wyzykowski.

Both the Avalanche and the Howard’s Prius traveled into oncoming traffic where Wyzykowski’s vehicle also struck a Toyota Camry.

Ms. Howard was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son died a few hours later after being rushed to Round Rock Medical Center.

Another passenger in the Prius and three of the Camry’s occupants were also taken to the hospital for serious injuries – one passenger suffered a broken neck while another suffered a broken back.

Wyzykowksi fled the scene of the accident wearing only a towel, but was found at a nearby apartment complex soon after. Police reported that the man was uncooperative and cocky, and showed little concern for the other occupants.

Wyzykowski refused to complete a sobriety test upon his arrest, telling officers they could get a blood sample from an attorney in a few days; however, tests run for medical purposes showed the man had a blood alcohol content of .27 percent – more than three times the legal limit.

Austin Drunk Driver Charged with Manslaughter

Wyzykowski is facing 19 felony charges for in connection with the accident:

  • 2 counts of Intoxication Manslaughter
  • 2 counts of Manslaughter
  • 4 counts of Intoxication Assault
  • 4 counts of Aggravated Assault
  • 5 counts of Failure to Stop and Render Aid in the 3rd degree
