Wrong-Way Collision Kills 3, Injures 2
A wrong-way driver is responsible for a crash on I-75 in Detroit that ended in fire, three deaths, and two injuries.
About the Fatal Wrong-Way Collision
According to reports, the crash involved two vehicles on southbound I-75 south of the I-94 interchange on Jan. 4th at approximately 4 am.
One victim was thrown from the vehicle and at least one of the vehicles burned. Of the two injured victims, one was known to be in critical condition.
The freeway was closed for several hours for the cleanup and investigation.
The wrong-way driver was identified as 34-year-old Leeanna Custard. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The two remaining fatalities were passengers of the other vehicle and were identified as Karl Hawkins, 23, and Elijah Holden, 21,

According to statistics published by the Boston Globe, wrong-way collisions kill around 360 people annually.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, wrong way collisions account for just 3 percent of recent years’ crashes on highways; they are, however, much more likely to end in fatalities and critical injuries than any other form of crash.
The fatality rate is between 12-17 percent higher in accidents involving wrong-way collisions than other type of accidents.
