Bicyclist Hospitalized After Hitting Car

According to KSAT, a man on a bicycle was hospitalized after running a red light and slamming into a car early Monday morning in downtown San Antonio.

Driver Will Not be Charged

Police say the man, 34, was riding his bike at around 2:30 a.m. near Lexington Avenue and E. Quincy Street when he crashed into a car. KSAT reports that the man ran a red light going north on Lexington when he couldn’t stop his bike, hitting the car and causing injury.

According to KSAT, the man was transported to University Hospital with multiple injuries.

Bicycle Crash Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), 726 pedalcyclists were killed in 2014 in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Here are some other statistics from the NHTSA:

  • Seventy-one percent of all pedalcyclists who died in motor vehicle crashes in 2014 died in crashes in urban areas.
  • The pedalcyclist fatality rate per capita (rate per million people) was almost 8 times greater for males than females in 2014.
  • 50,000 pedalcyclists were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2014.
