Authorities say a Jet Ski collision is to blame for one fatality on Monday evening on Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie, Texas, according to the Dallas Morning News.
About the Fatal Jet Ski Accident
Capt. Tony Norton with Texas Parks and Wildlife says two men and two women were using the Jet Skis on Joe Pool Lake around 5 p.m. when the accident occurred. Two Jet Skis, each carrying a man and woman, collided with each other. One man, identified as Wayne Story, 42 of Irving, Texas, was killed by injuries sustained in the crash.
An off-duty fire fighter witnessed the accident and was able to pull Story’s body from the water and perform CPR. Story was later taken to Methodist Mansfield Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Texas Parks and Wildlife will conduct an investigation into the Jet Ski accident. At this time alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
Recreational Boating Accident Statistics
The U.S. Coast Guard estimates 4,062 recreational boating accidents in 2013 which resulted into 560 deaths and 2,620 injuries. In about 77 percent of fatal accidents, the victim drowned. Of those drowning victims, 84 percent were not wearing life jackets. Furthermore, 80 percent of all drowning victims were using a vessel less than 21 feet in length.
