Bus Driver at Fault in Fatal School Bus Accident
Investigators have determined that a school bus driver was at fault in a fatal collision with a dump truck that left one student dead.
About the Fatal School Bus Accident
According to the Idaho Statesman, the school bus, driven by Debra Boatwright, 56, was traveling east on Deer Flat Road when pulled out into an intersection and was struck by a dump truck driven by Charles Samuel Derby, 33.
Investigators believe that, though she likely stopped at the stop sign posted at the intersection, Boatwright had failed to yield to the oncoming dump truck and moved into the vehicle’s path.
Derby, who was not required to stop at the intersection, attempted to avoid the bus, but struck its front right axle. The collision caused Boatwright to lose control of the bus which then struck a stop sign and a street sign.
The collision resulted in the death of 11-year-old Daniel Cook and the hospitalization of four other children.
The report did indicate that Derby had marijuana in his system, but did not indicate that the drug had contributed to the accident.

- This marked an increase in the number of bus related fatalities with 278 deaths being recorded in 2010 and 254 deaths in 2009.
- In addition, roughly 24,000 people were injured as a result of traffic collisions involving buses.
