Experts Warn of Catastrophic Trampoline Park Injuries

With trampoline parks rising in popularity, experts are urging consumers to avoid them due to injury risk.

What the Experts Say About Trampoline Parks

CBS News reports that, according to some experts, trampoline parks can cause catastrophic and life-threatening injuries. Don McPherson, a gymnastics coach and expert witness in hundreds of trampoline park cases, states that trampoline parks can cause injuries including broken necks and backs, dislocations, crush injuries, and bleeding in the brain.

Factors present in trampoline parks such as lack of proper supervision, chain links and steel cables, shallow foam pits, and inadequate padding all increase the risk of injury.

Trampoline Injury Statistics

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there were more than 140,000 estimated trampoline-related injuries in 2017. Of these, more than an estimated 90,000 occurred in children ages five to fourteen, while more than an estimated 25,000 occurred in children younger than five.

Trampoline Safety Tips

The CPSC provides some guidelines for helping to avoid injuries when using trampolines. These include:

  • Allow only one person on the trampoline at a time
  • Do not use trampolines if there is high wind
  • Inspect trampolines regularly for tears and missing parts
  • Do not allow children under six to use full-sized trampolines
  • Supervise children at all times
