Nationwide Recall Issued for 50,000 School Buses – Risk of Injury
Jarod Cassidy7 months ago
More than 50,000 Thomas Built school buses have been recalled due to concerns that children may not be adequately protected while in their seats during the crash, resulting in an increased risk of collision.
Details of the School Bus Recall
According to FOX 8, about 53,528 Thomas Built school buses have been recalled due to a problem with impact absorption and potential risk of injury posed to occupants.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) disclosed that the seats on the recalled buses may have been manufactured with styrene blocks which, according to NHTSA, may not offer enough impact absorption around the steel seat frame of seats’ back support.
Failure to provide proper impact absorption can cause occupants to be injured by the steel seat frames in the event of a collision.
Daimler Trucks North America, of which Thomas Built Buses is a subsidiary, will began notifying owners and districts of affected buses and will install additional material between the back and the vinyl cover to increase the seat’s impact absorption at no cost.
Notifications are expected to begin December 2.
