New Mexico Daycare Workers Sentenced to 36 Years for Hot Car Death

John Curiel2 weeks ago

The two owners of a Portales, New Mexico daycare have each been sentenced to a maximum of 36 years in prison for the hot-car death of Maliyah Jones and the brain damage suffered by Aubrey Loya.

Information About the Sentencing

According to Local 12, Mari and Sandy Taylor were found guilty and sentenced on two counts of reckless child abuse.

In July 2017, the Taylors left Maliyah Jones and Aubrey Loya in the back of a daycare van for hours during a summer heat wave. Loya suffered brain damage and Jones died of heat stroke. Both children were under the age of 2 at the time.

The Taylors Apologize for the Incident

Mari and Sandy Taylor spoke to the court before their sentence was handed down. The Taylors and heir defense team always maintained  the incident was a terrible mistake, asking for probation to a 12-year prison sentence. The defense team submitted 87 letters from family and friends on the Taylors’ behalf.

While the judge took the letters into account, the Taylors ultimately received  the 36-year maximum.
