A California construction company has been fined following a fatal construction accident that left one man dead.

According to reports, on July 15, at 7:00 a.m., a 28-year-old worker for Maggiora & Ghilotti Inc. was killed in a tragic construction accident in Petaluma, California.

Jared Overfield was working on a project on Highway 101 that involved replacing a water pipe near a frontage road where Petaluma Boulevard South and Kastania Road connect.

He was assisting the operator of a forklift transport 40-foot, 8,000-pound concrete-coated steel pipe when the pipe rolled down a hill, crushing Overfield. Officials say that the pipe was not properly secured to the forklift.

California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health fined Maggiora & Ghilotti Inc. for $38,250 for failing to provide proper safety precautions for the workers. This is the third time that the Cal/OSHA has cited this company.

Construction Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,585 people were killed in on the job accidents in 2013 – this averages to 88 deaths a week or more than 12 deaths a day.
  • 4,101 of record on the job deaths occurred in private industry, and 828 were attributed to construction accidents.
  • Among the leading causes of death at construction sites are:
    • Falls
    • Struck by object
    • Electrocutions
    • Caught-in/between
