Rodney Christopher Chase, 58, was flagging traffic at the intersection of Fort Smallwood Road and Hillcreek Road at around 12:50 p.m. local time. Officials say Chase was hit by a vehicle traveling southwest on Fort Smallwood Road, where two lanes were reduced to one lane due to construction.
WBALTV reports that Chase was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Chase was using a rotating stop and slow sign in the center of the work zone when the driver of an SUV was traveling too fast and struck the man. Officials believe the driver did not see the worker before the fatal collision.
According to WBALTV, the investigation into the fatal accident could take months to complete. Drivers are reminded to slow down and obey traffic laws when traveling through work zones and construction areas. The road was under construction as crews repair concrete on the bridge over Rock Creek.
