Corpus Christi Woman Dies from Injuries Sustained in Central Park Bicycle Accident

A Texas woman was seriously injured July 17 following a bicycle accident in Central Park. She died of her injuries on Thursday.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to the New York Daily News, 54-year-old Gloria Garcia lost control of her bicycle while riding on West Drive near W. 80 St. Authorities state she died of her injuries at New York Presbyterian Hospital on Wednesday.

A preliminary investigation led police to believe that Garcia had swerved to avoid a pedestrian preceding the accident; however, her family claims she was cut off by a pedicab.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center:

  • In 2014, 4,884 pedestrians and 726 bicyclists were killed in incidents involving motor vehicles. This averages to 12 deaths each day.
  • An additional 50,000 bicyclists were injured that same year.
  • Among the leading causes of bicyclist injuries in 2012 were:
    • Stuck by vehicle
    • Fall
    • Road in poor condition
    • Rider error
