Massive Breast Implant Recall Linked to Cancer

Ashley Peterson4 months ago

Some textured breast implants have been recalled after being linked to a rare cancer.

About the Breast Implant Recall

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has decided to issue a recall request for textured breast implants made by Allergan due to the implants causing cancer in some women. The cancer is not breast cancer but is a rare form of lymphoma called anaplastic large-cell lymphoma.

While it can often be cured by removing the implant and the tissue around it can kill the patient if it is allowed to spread. Women who have the implants and begin to display symptoms, notably swelling and fluid around the implant, should be checked for cancer immediately.

Those that do not display symptoms do not need to have the implants removed. However, doctors should not implant any more of the recalled pieces and should return any they have to Allergan.

Allergen Textured Breast Implants Covered by the Recall

According to the New York Times, the implants involved in this recall are:

  • Natrelle saline-filled breast implants
  • Natrelle silicone-filled breast implants
  • Natrelle Inspira silicone-filled breast implants
  • Natrelle 410 highly cohesive anatomically shaped silicone-filled breast implants
  • Expanders like Natrelle 133 Plus tissue expander and Natrelle 133 tissue expander with suture tabs

Who Is At Risk of Breast Implant-Related Cancer?

Due to the strong correlations between BIA-ALCL and textured breast implants, it would appear that women with textured breast implants are most at risk. Studies on BIA-ALCL report that the relative risk of the disease with textured implants is 400 times greater compared to women without breast implants.

While textured implants are not generally favored in the US, only making up about 10-15% of breast implants performed in the United States, it is still estimated that there are 3 million women with textured implants living in the United States.

The disease usually presents itself 8 to 10 years after implantation and typically results in unilateral swelling and fluid collection (called a seroma) as well as asymmetry. Early symptoms may also include pain, rash, capsule contracture, and swollen or enlarged lymph nodes.

If detected in the early stages and treated in a timely manner, BAI-ALCL has a fairly low mortality rate. However, more advanced and aggressive cases of BAI-ALCL will require more systemic treatment with a mean survival of about 12 years.
