Passerby Rescues Two from Fiery Wreckage

WSPA reports that the fatal crash occurred around 8:10 pm Tuesday on Interstate 85 near Blacksburg when a 2007 Freightliner drifted from the northbound lanes into oncoming traffic and collided with a second tractor-trailer in the southbound lanes.

The driver of the 2007 Freightliner was killed in the crash. The Cherokee County Coroner said extensive burns have made it difficult to identify the victim and that dental records will be needed.

The driver and the passenger of the second 18-wheeler were rescued by a passerby. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

About 300 feet of asphalt and 400 feet of guardrail was damaged in the accident and southbound lanes of I-85 are expected to be closed through Wednesday.
