Delays at Veterans Affairs Hospitals Leads to Veteran Deaths

The director of the Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital in Augusta, Georgia made a rare public apology after CNN investigated three deaths at the facility. The investigation uncovered a lot of problems in the VA.

Problems with Veterans Affairs

  • The CNN investigation revealed that military veterans are dying needlessly because of long waits and delayed care at U.S. veterans hospitals.
  • The investigation revealed that the most dire cases occured at the Williams Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina, where veterans are waiting months for simple gastrointestinal procedure and because their cancers are not diagnosed in time.
  • The Dorn facility has confirmed there have been up to 6 deaths related to delays in medical care, though other sources say that number could be closer to 20.
  • The VA has acknowledged that it has a rampant problem with delays at its facilities; the Augusta medical center, where three veterans have recently died, has a waiting list of 4,500 patients alone.
  • Although the VA has made statements that the problems with delays in medical treatment are being fixed, patients and medical staff deny those claims, and say that delays are still a major problem.
