Distracted Truck Driver Causes Fiery Wreck on Highway

semi-truck driving on highway

According to MLive, a distracted truck driver crashed into a disabled car on the highway after reaching for a phone in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Thursday morning.

About the Semi-truck Crash

The semi crash occurred on U.S. Highway 131 near the Parkview Drive overpass at around 7:40 a.m. local time. Officials say a tractor-trailer traveling southbound swerved out of its lane and crashed into a car that was disabled on the edge of the highway.

MLive reports that the truck sideswiped the car, which had a 45-year-old woman inside that was waiting for a tow truck. Officials say the driver of the truck reached for his cellphone before swerving across the highway. The wreck ruptured the semi’s fuel tank, causing the scene to be engulfed in flames.

The driver of the disabled car sustained a minor injury in the collision, and the truck driver was not hurt, according to MLive. The truck driver was cited for improper lane use.

Southbound lanes of Highway 131 were shut down for around two hours while officials cleaned up the crash and the fuel spill.
