DPS Search for Driver Involved in Fatal Hit-and-Run

Cedar Creek police are searching for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run that left a young woman dead.

Details of the Bastrop County Hit-and-Run

KXAN reports that Maria Salazar-Martinez was airlifted to the hospital on July 5 after her 2017 Honda Accord collided with a 2007 GMC Yukon in the 1700 block of State Highway 21 near Watts Lane. Police said the vehicles collided head-on but did not reveal who crossed the center line.

The driver of the Yukon fled from the scene on foot. Martinez later succumbed to her injuries.

DPS is working to find the hit-and-run driver, who could face a felony charge for failure to stop and render aid. They ask that anyone with information contact 1-800-252-TIPS (8477).

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,773 traffic-related deaths were recorded in Texas in 2016, marking a 5.45-percent increase from the 3,578 deaths recorded in 2015.
  • 1,972 of the deaths recorded in 2016 were attributed to crashes that occurred in rural areas of the state.
  • Head-on collision killed 638 people in 2016.
  • An additional 265,076 people were injured in car crashes in Texas in 2016.
