Driver Faces DUI Charges after Striking, Killing Tow Truck Driver in Tampa

According to ABC Action News, a tow truck driver assisting a disabled motorist died after being struck by a suspected drunk driver in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday.

Details of the Drunk Driving Crash

The accident occurred at around 1:30 a.m. local time on Interstate 275 near Fowler Avenue. Danny Ray Hand, 42, an employee of Crockett’s Towing and Recovery, assisted with a disabled vehicle in the west shoulder of the interstate.

According to police, 30-year-old Leandro Corrales Perez traveled southbound in a 2001 Toyota Camry and drove off the road, crashing into the tow truck driver. ABC Action News reports that Hand sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene of the wreck.

Officials arrested Perez and charged him with driving under the influence manslaughter. According to ABC Action News, Hand is the third Tampa-area tow truck driver killed while on the job in 2016.
