Driver Faces DWI Charges after Striking Bicyclist

According to the San Antonio Express-News, a suspected drunk driver crashed into a bicyclist at the end of a bike event in Houston, Texas, on Friday night.

Details of the Car-Bicycle Wreck

Dozens of bicyclists gathered at the end of the Critical Mass bicycle event in the 2100 block of Washington Avenue near Henderson Street. At around 11:30 p.m., a driver in a white sedan crashed into the bicyclist, tossing the victim over the car’s hood and shattering the windshield.

Following the collision, the driver fled the scene but was soon apprehended and arrested by police, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

The driver of the car, 27-year-old Raymond Cui, faces several charges including failure to render aid in an accident involving serious bodily injury and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.

The condition of the bicyclist is unknown, reports the San Antonio Express-News. Friday’s bike ride, the annual Halloween event, drew a large amount of people, many witnessing the wreck.

Bicycle Crash Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), 726 pedalcyclists died in 2014 in motor vehicle traffic crashes. Here are some other statistics from the NHTSA:

  • Seventy-one percent of all pedalcyclists who died in motor vehicle crashes in 2014 died in crashes in urban areas.
  • The pedalcyclist fatality rate per capita (rate per million people) was almost 8 times greater for males than females in 2014.
  • 50,000 pedalcyclists were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2014.
