Driver Hits Mardi Gras Marching Band, Injures 12

12 people were injured in Gulf Shores, Alabama Tuesday after an elderly driver plowed into Mardi Gras parade participants, injured 12 members of a high school marching band.

Details of the Mardi Gras Parade Accident

According to Reuters, an 2008 Ford Expedition being driven by a 73-year-old was participating in the annual Gulf Shores Mardi Gras parade. The vehicle began accelerating for an unknown reason and crashed into a marching band that was directly in front of it.

Responders were called to the scene just after 10 a.m. At least 12 students were injured in the accident, three of whom were listed in critical condition.

Police are working to gather video footage and witness statements in an attempt to determine what caused the driver to lose control of his vehicle. The driver is cooperating with authorities.

The parade was canceled after the accident.

Parade Accident Happens Days After Another Mardi Gras Tragedy

The incident comes just days after a tragic drunk driving accident in New Orleans.

In the incident a drunk driver was accused of crashing a pickup into a crowd of spectators of a weekend Mardi Gras parade.

At least 28 people were injured in that accident.
