The crash occurred at the intersection of County Road 721 and U.S. Highway 96. A tractor-trailer carrying logs pulled into the crossover and waited to turn north onto U.S. 96.
However, the logs from the truck protruded into the southbound lanes of U.S. 96, according to the Beaumont Enterprise.
A man in a pickup truck and another 18-wheeler traveled southbound, with the pickup truck in the inside-most lane. Both the pickup truck and the 18-wheeler collided with the protruding timber.
John Ulmer Smith, 63, the pickup truck driver, sustained serious injuries in the wreck. The Beaumont Enterprise reports that these injuries are not life-threatening and Smith is receiving treatment at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.
The drivers of the both semi-trucks did not receive injuries in the collision. Christopher Cheatham, 28, the driver of the log truck, received a citation, reports the Beaumont Enterprise.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,903 people died in crashes involving large trucks in 2014. Here is some additional information on 18-wheeler accidents:
