Driver Injured after Colliding with Log-Hauling Semi-Truck

According to the Beaumont Enterprise, a crash involving two semi-trailers and a pickup truck result in one serious injury south of Buna, Texas, on Friday morning.

Details of the 18-Wheeler Crash

The crash occurred at the intersection of County Road 721 and U.S. Highway 96. A tractor-trailer carrying logs pulled into the crossover and waited to turn north onto U.S. 96.

However, the logs from the truck protruded into the southbound lanes of U.S. 96, according to the Beaumont Enterprise.

A man in a pickup truck and another 18-wheeler traveled southbound, with the pickup truck in the inside-most lane. Both the pickup truck and the 18-wheeler collided with the protruding timber.

John Ulmer Smith, 63, the pickup truck driver, sustained serious injuries in the wreck. The Beaumont Enterprise reports that these injuries are not life-threatening and Smith is receiving treatment at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

The drivers of the both semi-trucks did not receive injuries in the collision. Christopher Cheatham, 28, the driver of the log truck, received a citation, reports the Beaumont Enterprise.

  • An estimated 111,000 people were injured in crashes involving large trucks in 2014.
    • 74 percent of those injured were occupants of other vehicles.
    • From 2013 to 2014, there was a 19-percent increase in the number of injured occupants of other vehicles involved in crashes with large trucks.
  • Seventy-nine percent of fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred on weekdays.
  • Sixty-one percent of the fatal crashes involving large trucks occurred in rural areas.
