Drunk Driver Causes Fatal Crash with 10-Year-Old Son in Car

A Seagoville man was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault causing severe bodily injury after causing a fatal collision in Dallas’ Redbird neighborhood. The suspected drunk driver had his 10-year-old son in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Details of the Fatal Crash

According to The Dallas Morning News, authorities believe Elie Kelly, 43, was intoxicated when he caused a fatal crash at the intersection of West Camp Wisdom Road and South Hampton Road on Sunday.

A Chevrolet Equinox was attempting a left hand turn when it was struck on the front right side by Kelly’s Dodge Charger. The SUV went airborn before landing on its roof.

The passenger of the Equinox, Patrick Henry, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 25-year-old, was transported to Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Kelly’s 10-year-old son was taken to Children’s Medical Center Dallas with a broken are and possible internal injuries.

The following information was provided by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT):

  • 3,531 people were killed in car crashes in Texas in 2015, marking little change from the 3,536 deaths reported in 2014.
  • 807 people were killed in crashes that occurred at or in relation to intersections in 2015.
  • 960 of the traffic fatalities recorded in 2015 were attributed to crashes where at least one driver was intoxicated. The accounts for 27% of all Texas traffic fatalities.
  • An additional 246,335 people were injured in auto accidents in Texas in 2015.
