Drunk Driver Hits and Kills Two Motorcyclists


According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a man and woman on a motorcycle died after being hit by a drunk driver on Highway 72 in Bollinger County, Missouri.

Driver of Pickup Uninjured

Richard J. Augustine, 58, and Debra S. Smith, 60, were traveling west on Highway 72 when the accident occurred. Paul E. Patton, 49, was traveling east in his pickup truck when he crossed the center line and struck the motorcyclists, tossing the two from the motorcycle, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Augustine and Smith died at the scene of the accident. Both were wearing helmets.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Patton was drunk at the time of the crash. On Monday, The Bollinger County prosecutor charged Patton with two counts of first-degree involuntary manslaughter.

The crash happened at around 3:30 p.m. local time and about two miles west of Patton, Missouri.

  • Motorcycle deaths accounted for 13 percent of all motor vehicle crash deaths in 2014.
  • Per mile traveled in 2014, the number of deaths on motorcycles was over 27 times the number in cars.
  • 36 percent of fatally injured motorcyclists were age 50 or older.
  • Ninety-two percent of motorcyclists killed in 2014 were males.
