Hurricane Season—June 1 to November 30—has already begun. Coastline states should understand their risks and be preparing for these severe storms.
Hurricanes, scientifically known as tropical cyclones, form over the Atlantic or eastern Pacific Oceans when the air above sea level warms and rises, causing an area of low pressure beneath.
As the warm air rises and cools off, forming clouds, cooler air swirls in beneath to take its place, causing a rotating funnel that continues to grow as more air and clouds are added.
A rotating storm with wind speeds of 39 to 73 mph is considered a tropical storm and is given a name by the World Meteorological Organization.
When the storm reaches 74 mph, it is officially classified as a tropical cyclone, or hurricane, and ranked on the Saffir Simpson scale for its speed and potential to destroy.
