Explosion at Missouri Ammunition Plant Kills One, Injures Four

One worker is dead and four others are injured following an explosion at a U.S. Army ammunition plant in Independence, Missouri.

Details of the Ammunition Plant Explosion

According to Reuters, the fatal explosion occurred in a primer mixing cell at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant around 1 pm CDT Tuesday.

The facility was quickly secured by U.S. Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents and remained closed for the remainder of the day. Workers were scheduled to return to work Wednesday.

The identity of the employee killed in the explosion has not been released to the public.

On the Job Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,836 workers were killed on the job in 2015. This averages to more than 93 deaths a week or more than 13 deaths every day.
  • 4,379 of those deaths occurred in private industry and 937 were associated with construction.
  • Among the leading causes of work-related deaths are:
    • Falls
    • Struck by object
    • Electrocutions
    • Caught-In/Between
